What is it?
Hydroxyapatite an organic compound made of calcium, phosphorus, oxygen, and hydrogen. It serves as a foundation for our teeth, and is often abbreviated HA.
Nano vs Micro?
Hydroxyapatite can come in various sizes depending on its use. For oral health, we want that particle size to be small enough to make contact with our teeth and optimally remineralize. Most of the research is conducted using nano-hydroxyapatite, which is 1,000 times smaller than microcrystalline hydroxyapatite, which is 1,000 times smaller than a millimeter. It's tiny!

Not quite. There is reason to believe that particles that small can be toxic for the rest of our bodies, may cross the blood-brain barrier, and could potentially even damage DNA. Europe has stricter standards for safety than the US, and has not deemed nano-hydroxyapatite safe.
Now, imagine putting an onion in a food processor for a few seconds. Would each piece be diced the same? Of course not! The same principle applies to HA. There is no way to ensure that each particle size is the same. As a result, even our larger microcrystalline hydroxyapatite will contain nano-hydroxyapatite. It will just contain less nano particles than if we used straight nano.
